DIGITAL STORYTELLING Guidebook for youth workers
What's the guidebook about ?
The guidebook is a capacity building tool for youth workers and other professionals working with socially excluded young people. It aims to support youth workers in delivering training courses for NEETs through the storytelling methodology.
The aim of the guidebook is therefore to reveal storytelling as a useful tool in youth work and guide youth workers through the process of the preparation and implementation of a digital storytelling training course or workshop. The guidebook is meant for youth workers ; it helps them to encourage, support and assist NEETs in developing their self-esteem and self-awareness, in valorising their potential through storytelling, and in developing their stories with the use of multimedia to enhance their future opportunities and their social inclusion.
An understanding of verbal storytelling is necessary, before moving to work on digital storytelling.
How does it work ?
For the guidebook to serve its purpose and to be as practical as possible, we divided it into four main parts:
1. ABOUT STORYTELLING
This section informs the reader on the roots and theoretical background of storytelling. It explains the concept of storytelling and gives an overview of pedagogical contexts in which storytelling applies, with an emphasis on youth work, and recommendations on the use of storytelling. There are also resources.
2. HOW TO TELL STORIES
This section provides readers with practical guidelines and recommendations for implementing storytelling workshops with NEETs, explaining the outcomes of storytelling, and different pedagogical approaches, learning and coaching methods, and interview techniques that help to recognise, plot and design a story.
3. DIGITAL STORYTELLING
Here, we provide practical guidelines for the digital and visual context of telling a story, its narration, and its technical constraints. Furthermore, this section gives the reader information on digital technologies and supporting the process of creating a digital story, from the designing and shooting, to editing.
4. EXAMPLES & PRACTICAL TOOLS
This section provides the reader with useful examples of digital stories, briefly analysing them and pointing out their strengths, weaknesses and recommendations. Furthermore, it equips the reader with practical tools and exercises, worksheets and handouts to be used during the storytelling workshops and directs the reader to other useful resources for further exploration of digital storytelling.
The guidebook is a practical tool which can be used in different contexts, so the reader can feel free to jump from section to section and go directly to topics of particular interest, using the table of contents as a base.
The Digital Storytelling guidebook is the first Intellectual Output of the Comp-pass project, developed by PiNA Association for Culture and Education, Associação Mais Cidadania, and Know and Can Association. It explores a powerful educational and pedagogical tool - digital storytelling - which is a very common technique used in many areas, including marketing, journalism, and politics. This tool consists of telling stories about a product, a situation or a person. Storytelling, furthermore, proves to be very useful in the field of youth work, as a therapeutic method for self-revelation and improvement, both for the receiver and the teller of the story.
